I N T A S administration H T A C, W H A T IS I N T A S ?

I N T A S is an INTernational A s s o c i a t i o n for the p r o m o t i o n o f c o - o p e r a t i o n with scientists from the N e w Independent States of the former Soviet Union.

I N T A S m e m b e r s h i p comprises the fifteen m e m b e r states o f the E u r o p e a n Union, the E u r o p e a n C o m m u n i t y, Estonia, Hungary, Iceland, Israel, Latvia, Norway, R o m a n i a, the Slovak R e p u b l i c, Slovenia a n d Switzerland. I N T A S was established as an i n d e p e n d e n t international organisation under Belgian law, in 1993, to help preserve the scientific potential within its partner countries which include A r m e n i a, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, K y r g y z s t a n, M o l d o v a, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan. H o w ? B y funding j o i n t research p r o j e c t s and networks that involve scientists from its m e m b e r states and its partner countries, and that are selected on the basis o f scientific excellence, mutual benefit and s o c i o - e c o n o m i c relevance. It also s u p p o r t s conferences and workshops, runs a y o u n g scientist p r o g r a m m e and funds infrastructure actions for the benefit of a wider section o f the scientific community.

W i t h a current m a n d a t e up until the end o f 2002, I N T A S c o m p l e m e n t s I N C O - C o p e r n i c u s ' activities. During the Fifth Framework p r o g r a m m e, the E U will c o n t r i b u t e a total of 70 million E u r o with additional contributions being m a d e b y M e m b e r States and organisations which -fund calls for proposals with I N T A S.

I N T A S funds j o i n t scientific research in the following areas:

- Physical sciences: astronomy, nuclear, plasma and c o n d e n s e d m a t t e r physics, engineering sciences, space and aeronautics related sciences;

- C h e m i c a l / b i o l o g i c a l sciences: chemistry, life sciences and medicine, earth sciences, environment and energy;

- H u m a n sciences a n d m a t h e m a t i c s : information technology, telecommunicati ons, e c o n o m i c s, m a t h e m a t i c s, h u m a n and social sciences.

Certain calls for p r o p o s a l s are funded in c o n j u n c t i o n with other organisation a n d may b e restricted in their s c o p e.

A p p l i c a t i o n s for conference and y o u n g scientist grants c a n b e m a d e at any time b u t are evaluated collectively 3 times a year. T h e average conference grant ranges from 5,000 to 8,000 E u r o whilst y o u n g scientist grants vary b e t w e e n 1,000 and 3,500 E u r o.
